The Cove
Renovation
Marion, MA
This “cottage by the sea” is a 15,000-square-foot getaway sprawling along the shores of the Sippican Harbor, with views of Marion across the bay. With two upper floors of what were once staff quarters flanking the fun “middle” of the home, we completely overhauled this circa 1900 estate, transforming it into a place to escape the city but also work, if need be. We pushed the kitchen into a more prominent place in the home, surrounding it with a seating lounge, breakfast room, and the formal dining room. Views of the ocean can be had throughout these spaces. On the upper level sea breezes run unencumbered through carefully preserved and restored louver bedroom doors. Hardware original to the home was also retooled and restored, along with two in-wall units of 20-foot fire hoses that were once functioning, relics of an ever-distant time. Spacious working and formal pantries run the length of the kitchen, and a new bar with solid walnut full-height cabinets and island, just steps away from the bluestone extension terrace, ensure comfortable entertaining. Hand-painted designs on the flooring in the living room and sunporch, along with the back of an open corner cabinet in the den, add elements of detail work befitting such a grand estate. Restored gumwood wainscoting and coffered ceiling beams with textured wallpaper inlay make up a sizable rec room, housing one of 11 fireplaces. Custom vanities fill out almost all of the 11 bathrooms. Outside, an outdoor whirlpool hot tub wrapped in fieldstone veneer sits atop the garappa deck, with a bluestone pathway running out to the boat dock.
