KCB Boiler Room Breakfast Club: Best Practices with Cold Climate Heat Pump Technology & Minisplits for Cooling Presented by David Hazel, Mitsubishi Electric

Kevin Cradock Builders hosted David Hazel, Senior Manager for Construction Performance for Mitsubishi Electric in September for an informative session about the latest technology for cold climate heat pumps and minisplits.

We all know that energy codes are changing to deal with climate fluctuations. Homeowners in the luxury market have an increased awareness of the impact of the built environment on health and wellness. Since the pandemic, clients are much more tuned into the air quality in their homes. There’s also a growing demand for energy efficient homes. And, above all, clients are looking for ease of operation and comfort.

“I’m seeing so many more residential builders and GCs specifying high performance heat pumps in their new construction builds and remodels, largely because clients now demand healthier homes and increasingly understand the comfort, efficiency and healthy home capabilities these systems provide,” said presenter David Hazel.

A change from the past

Heat pumps from an earlier era just didn’t work well in our region.  Traditional heat pumps had a poor cold weather performance track record. They required large electric heat strips and were inefficient.

The new all-climate heat pumps from Mitsubishi (and other manufacturers) are designed to handle cold climates with heating performance below 0 degrees Fahrenheit. They are built to be more energy efficient and cost effective. In 2022, heat pumps outsold gas furnaces according to the New York Times.

Part of the surge in heat pumps and minisplits has been driven by new models available including ductless wall and ceiling systems, ducted low/mid static, and ducted multi positioned systems, all delivered by electricity. A typical set up includes an outdoor unit, indoor unit, refrigerant lineset, and thermostat/controller.

One of the most innovative developments are the ceiling mounted 1-way cassettes. They’re unobtrusive and offer outstanding efficiency with condensate management built in. Another option is the ceiling mounted ductless 4-way cassettes. Right now, these are available in 24” or 33” models and can offer a fresh air intake capability. Another option is a ductless – low wall/floor mount unit, great for a pony wall or finished attic space.

Teamwork is key

As Michael Jordan said, “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.” Mitsubishi Electric works with HVAC contractors and builders to educate and train their industry partners.

“We like using these products because the cutting-edge technology makes the homes we build and remodel more efficient and comfortable for our clients,” Kevin Cradock says. “As we often work in older homes, we need reliable systems that can be retrofit for complicated spaces.”

Thank you to David Hazel for his informative presentation and providing breakfast to our guests. We will be announcing the 2024 KCB Boiler Room Breakfast Club series dates and topics in early December.
